How to Choose a Wedding Cake Style
Brides-to-be…. Did anyone else know that there were SO MANY OPTIONS when it came to wedding cakes? The sky is the limit when it comes to your cake and as long as you have a great baker on your dream team of vendors, you have a perfect opportunity to add a bit of personality to your big day. As a major focal point on your big day, your wedding cake should represent you and your partner but it should also perfectly align with the overall theme that you’ve already determined.
For example, if you’re having a very classic white wedding with lots of gold and greenery then you’re going to want something that fits in and compliments that style. The cake you’d choose for your theme will probably be a little different than if you were going for something a little more rustic.
Let me repeat this major caution: STICK TO YOUR STYLE! It’s so easy to get swept away by all the creative, beautiful, unique designs that other brides have used as you scroll through Pinterest and Instagram so don’t let that happen to you. Make sure the style you choose aligns perfectly with the rest of your wedding vibe and decor!
Once you have your theme nailed down and you have an idea of what you want, you’ll want to consider how big it needs to be and how many tiers you want. The size of your cake depends on how many people you’ll need to feed. Typically, not all of your guests will take cake UNLESS it is being served. If it’s not being served, you can cut your guest list by 10% and that’s roughly how many people you should plan on. Ask the baker how many tiers you’ll need to serve that number of guests given the size of the slice and then make sure that whoever is cutting the rest of the cake on the wedding day knows how big or small to make the pieces!
**Budget Hack: Ask the baker if they can do a smaller ‘wedding cake’ and then make a sheet cake to serve the guests. This will save you money and the guests will still get to enjoy the tasty flavor you picked out!
Now the fun part! As you go into a tasting, choose a flavor that reflects YOU! Don’t choose a standard white cake flavor just because that’s ‘traditional.’ Pick something YOU like or consider doing different flavors for different layers. You’ll also want to consider your frosting choices carefully based on the time of year you’re getting married. If you’re getting married in the summer, a fondant might be a better choice than a buttercream frosting because it won’t melt as easily in the heat. Don’t forget to keep color in mind as well... if you and your partner are planning on a not-so-nice cake smash, you probably don’t want them smashing blue cake into your face and possibly getting on your wedding dress! Not only that, but guests might not want to eat a cake that will turn their lips or tongue blue!
