6 Tips for Posing in Professional Wedding Photos

When it comes to your professional wedding photography session, a little posing preparation can go a long way. I have compiled six tips to help you prepare for your session and feel confident even before you put your dress on.

Control what you can

There are many things during photo shoots that you cannot control like the weather (the wind especially) or possibly being at a brand new venue. There are however things you can control like knowing your "good" side and telling your photographer so they can prioritize flattering angles from that direction. This may take a couple of minutes in front of the mirror or a quick review of previous photographs but believe me, it is worth it!

Practice before the session

A little bit of practice before your professional photography session can go a long way. Grab a full length mirror and try out a couple of natural poses. You can wear your wedding gown or just have everyday clothes on but the key is to consciously remember poses you like and ones you want to avoid. Your photographer will be there to guide you through your session too but just so you are one step ahead, this is a great way to prepare.

Lift your arm

It is easy to focus intently on your face and your smile during a photo session but don't forget about the rest of your body. If you are holding your bouquet or have your hand free, make sure to slightly lift your arm off the side of your body. This will tighten your arm muscles and avoid it from looking bigger than it really is.

Turn your shoulders

Posture plays a huge part in posing but angles are also very important. By turning your shoulders slightly instead of having a head-on shot, you will create dimension and a slimmer profile. You want to create depth in your photos not necessarily width. At least a 45 degree angle is usually the most flattering.

Bend your front knee

It is always good to have one knee bent during your photo session. This will help you avoid looking rigid or stiff. Putting your weight on your back leg and bending your front can help accentuate the curve of your legs but remember not to lean backwards. Leaning back can make you look uncomfortable so to fix this you may need to stand up a little straighter or lean slightly forward toward your photographer.

Relax

Your photographer is there to help you through your entire session. Don't worry if you have never had a professional photo session or if posing doesn't come naturally to you. As a professional, your photographer can provide direction and with a little practice at home, hopefully you will be able to work together to create absolutely stunning poses.
