Wedding Day Workshop in Logan, Utah | Cache Valley Photography Workshop

A few months ago, I joined up with Katie from Love, Kate Events to put on a joint workshop for both photographers and planners. I love working with Katie and both of those groups provide a perfect complement for each other! When it comes to the wedding industry, we all feel you can’t get enough exposure or networking with other creatives and it’s so inspiring to see how other people work!

For this workshop, we spent the day at a private residence in Logan, Utah, up near the mountains (which provided a lovely backdrop!) and enjoyed a full day of learning, practicing, and photography! We organized the schedule of the workshop to allow for plenty of time to shoot and practice the concepts that were just taught. For example, I hosted a short lecture on flat lay photography and gave tips for photographers shooting detail shots at their weddings, and then immediately after, we had time scheduled to break into teams and work on styling, designing the flat lay pieces, and then taking the flat lay photos — that they could then include in their portfolio!

During the course of the workshop, we went through an entire mock wedding day, which included getting ready photos, a ceremony, pictures of the bridal party, the “newly married” husband and wife, and even a mock wedding dinner and reception. Oh, and don’t forget the sparkler send-off! It was a lot of fun to take our time and get those perfect wedding shots you always want, without worrying about holding up the wedding day schedule or shooting in front of the audience of the real wedding.

At each new portion of the day/schedule, we took time to learn and educate each other first, and then practice to get some hands-on experience of what was just discussed. I love this format for workshops because it ensures that (a) visual learnings and hands-on learners are both able to benefit from the in-person instruction and (b) the photographers in attendance get perfect, beautiful new images to add to their portfolio that acts as a reference as they go off and continue to practice and implement what was learned at the workshop.

As a bonus, we included a mini flash workshop for the photographers where we discussed gear, lighting placement and the why behind the technique of using flash for your photography, and how it affects your images. I love talking about flash because it’s such a technical, structured way to ensure you get perfect photos, every time. Teaching flash is always a highlight for me!

Of course, life is always throwing curveballs, and we did end up in the rain, getting drenched for most of the day. However, it was still an absolute blast of a workshop and we all made the best of it (like you would at a real wedding!) and we all will have great memories of it!
