Why You Should Wear a Wedding Veil

When deciding what accessories you want for your wedding day, I frequently hear, “Should I wear a veil?” There are so many reasons why I recommend a veil to my brides! Veils can change the entire look and feel of your ensemble. If you’re not sure you want a veil, here are a couple things to consider:

  • It’s an accessory that’s easily removable! Perhaps you decide you’d only like to wear it for a formal photography session or for the first look before the ceremony. You can get those epic veil shots and then remove it for the reception or other instances where you might not feel like wearing it.

  • There are many different veil options from which to choose! With so many varieties of veils from length to detailing, there is sure to be a veil for each bride’s style. The easiest way to decide what type of veil would suit you best is to coordinate the veil with your wedding dress. A heavily embellished dress will benefit from a simpler veil with fewer decorations, whereas a simpler gown can easily be embellished with an intricate veil with beautiful textures such as lace or beading. Of course, a simple tulle veil will match any dress, from the sparkliest to the most classic style.

Veils are an incredibly fun prop for wedding day photos, so if you do decide a veil is going to be a part of your wedding day ensemble, consider the following details when you choose your veil:

  • The longer the veil the better! From a photographer’s point of view, long veils give us lots of room to play with swooping the veil off to the side or even into the camera lense for some dramatic shots. There are more opportunities to create romantic, swoon-worthy photos with a long, airy veil! Veils that are only as long as your fingertip or shorter are still beautiful, but the photo options will be more limited and we may not get as much variety. However, we will still have lots of fun with whatever veil length you choose!

  • The weight of your veil matters as well. If your veil is more embellished with thick lace, rhinestones, or beading, it will have more weight to it and won’t “fly” as well as a lighter veil will. If you’re dreaming of beautiful wedding photos with a veil floating through the air, opt for a veil with lighter details such as pearls or minimum beading in a cathedral or chapel length to optimize those veil photo opportunities!

Whatever direction you decide to go with a wedding veil, choose based on what you are wanting for your wedding day. I hope these considerations help you make the decision that’s best for you and will have you loving your wedding day and your wedding photos for many years to come!
