3 Reasons to Do a First Look

As your wedding day approaches, maybe you’ve started thinking about specific pictures you’re dying to have the photographer take! On the list could be the iconic “first look” shot. If you and your fiance are debating whether or not to include this picture in your day, take a moment to read the top three reasons why you definitely should do a first look!

  1. The first look is a special moment designed specifically for just the two of you. The rest of your day, while incredibly beautiful and wonderful, is going to be filled with loving family members and your closest friends. It’ll be very busy and full of introductions, thank yous, and many, many pictures. Enjoy the opportunity for a private moment where you can look into your special someone’s eyes and be completely in the moment!

  2. Before the big moment, you’ll want to take a deep breath. You’ve done all this planning, and now the big moment has finally arrived - it’s completely normal for you to feel some nerves and excitement. That means you also might need a second to pause, take a deep breath, and give the groom a “Let’s do this!” pep kiss! The first look, while it is a photo session, is also a great way to calm the nerves before you enter the room full of adoring friends and family.

  3. The first look is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. You are wearing THE dress, the one you stood in front of the mirror in the dress shop and knew was the dress meant for the biggest day of your life. The dress you knew you look stunning in. No wonder you want to enjoy your groom’s reaction! Having a first look session gives him the chance to be amazed at his beautiful bride without the pressure of onlookers or a ceremonial time limit. If your fiance is worried about the first look, have a discussion beforehand to reassure him that no matter his reaction, even if he’s not an emotional or overly excitable fellow, that the moment will be special and definitely picture-worthy.

Another fun first look option is a first look video! Videos are a great alternative to a photo session; there’s music, slow-motion effects, and all the excitement that builds up to that first look moment. Better still, make a first look video to accompany your first look photos! Pictures capture the moments; videos capture the experiences. I hope you will consider doing a first look now that you’ve read the top three reasons why first looks are a must-have in your wedding day photo lineup!
