Choosing the Perfect Wedding Exit Attire
Of all the decisions you make when planning your wedding, choosing what to wear when you’re leaving your reception might just be the most fun, least stressful decision. These pictures are some of my favorites to take because both bride and groom and just overflowing with joy and excitement to be past all the big festivities and ready for some time away, just the two of them.
The way I see it, there are three choices for wedding exit attire: classy outfits that still distinguish you as the bride and groom; super personal outfits that reflect more of your everyday style and are quintessentially YOU; the simplest option — your wedding gown and grooms suit/tux.
Classy outfits
The bride who chooses a classy outfit is usually looking for an excuse to get out of a bulky or uncomfortable wedding dress (what we loved wearing during the ceremony and standing in pictures may not be the best option for busting a move at the reception). I see a lot of brides opting for a second white dress — not a second wedding gown, per se, but a shorter, more casual but still white classy dress with an alternate pair of heels or flats (examples in the photos below). The groom will sometimes retain his wedding suit, or dress down to a suit if he was wearing a tux for the ceremony. Keeping with the traditional white dress still distinguishes the bride apart from other wedding guests, but it’s easier to be yourself and enjoy the part without worrying about a train behind you at all times.
Personal outfits
Another favorite option is when brides opt for a non-white, non-traditional gown or dress for the party after the ceremony. I love the way their personality shines through, both for the bride and the groom! The groom might lose the suit coat and maybe even the tie, a true sign that the party is hoppin’ — no one wants to be encumbered by a tie during the cha cha slide!
There really aren’t any rules for the exit attire of this kind of outfit. Anything goes, but the most successful of outfits are the ones you both feel most like yourselves in.
Keeping your wedding attire on
The most traditional of the exit attire options is to retain your wedding ensemble and leave the reception still all decked out. This is a timeless, classic option that will ensure your happiest faces get photographed still in your wedding attire. Which is a sound decision, in my opinion, since you likely spent a great investment of time and money on making sure you look your best for your big day!
