Cara + Dean | Summer Engagement Session at the Utah Capitol Building

Cue the drama, because Cara and Dean are a theatre couple through and through. Thankfully, their love story has a much sweeter ending than Romeo and Juliet - but is just as romantic! Cara and Dean met as new theatre students at Weber State in Ogden, Utah. Dean was quick to ask her out on a date and they have been inseparable ever since! While Dean drove long hours to finish his degree in Lighting Design, Cara continued to study theatre and has been involved in the coolest projects while she masters her craft.

One of Cara’s absolute favorite dates that they’ve been on was when Dean took her to the Hale Center Theatre in Sandy to see Bright Star. But, even better than seeing a show together is working on one together. Both Dean and Cara do lighting design, but Cara is also an actor. So, every once in a while, Dean gets to light her up on the stage. What could be brighter? :)

For their sweet summer engagement photoshoot, we headed to the Utah State Capitol Building in Salt Lake City. I have never had a bad photo session at the State Capitol Building. Like ever. It’s stunning year round! In the summer, the trees are lush and green and on the north side of the grounds is a huge reflection pool and fountain. There are also beautifully manicured lawns with plants and bushes that look great in pictures. The whole place is stunning! Plus, the capitol grounds are large enough that you can avoid the downtown Salt Lake crowds, especially if you shoot on a weekday. Of all of the photo locations in Northern Utah, the State Capitol building is definitely one of my favorites.

Just like in theatre, our engagement session had its fair share of hiccups! Cara had an earring that refused to cooperate and I totally dropped the ring in the grass while getting detail shots! Eeek! But as they say, the show went on, and we got some amazing photos. Cara and Dean’s wedding was originally set to take place at Wadley Farms in Lindon, Utah, in December but they’ve had to reschedule due to Covid and family health concerns. I absolutely loved working with this duo and cannot wait for their stage-worthy wedding to take place!
