How to Photograph Bridal Getting Ready Photos — Part 1

One of my favorite moments to photograph during a wedding is when the bride is getting ready for her big day. There is something so special about getting these private, behind-the-scenes moments with the bride and her closest friends and loved ones. As a photographer, I want you to feel completely ready to capture these beautiful and intimate moments with the bride. Here is part one of a two-part series on everything you need to know and do to be prepared to take bridal getting-ready photos.

Prep

Months before the wedding, prep your bride on what the getting ready photo experience will be like. The Wedding Guide is a perfect way to set expectations and walk them through the morning! On the big day, plan on arriving when the girls are getting ready and start photographing details like the rings, florals, and invitations. After photographing all the flat lay details while the bridal party finishes hair and makeup, it's finally time for group shots. Make sure all the girls are dressed before the bride so you can get action shots of them helping her with the final touches. You may need to check in with hair and makeup 30 minutes before to ensure they’ll be finished in time.

Lighting
The actual space the bride gets ready in may not have the best lighting or enough space. Lighting matters most of all, so don’t hesitate to walk around the venue and find a different spot for getting ready photos if needed. Look for a large light source like a room with windows on multiple sides or white walls if you plan on bouncing your flash to fill in shadows.

Location
If you are photographing in the same room they got ready in, ask the girls to clear the space of their belongings so the background is clean and decluttered. Neutral colored walls are ideal, as well as a space large enough for full-body shots of the whole group. I personally love windows as a background because they’re so light and elegant!

Now that you know what order to photograph the getting ready photos, how to get the best lighting, and what you should be aware of in your shooting location, check out part two of my series to see what my must-have shots are to ensure you capture every incredible moment of the bride getting ready for her special day.
