What's In My Bag? Part 1

Have you ever seen a photographer with a side bag or backpack and wondered what treasures were inside? What are the things they need to do their job? Well, I will share my bag of choice and reveal some secrets and some not so secret items inside the bag I use for client photography sessions.

First, before each session I go through all of my equipment. I have two canon 5d mark 4 cameras and use them at every shoot. Having two cameras is great because if something happens to one, I have a back up and I can offer a wider variety of photos while saving time not having to change lenses at every turn! Since I carry two cameras, I love my black rapid dual camera straps so I can comfortably wear two cameras at once.

Then comes lenses. I have a bag full of lenses and having the right one is essential for a photo shoot. The lenses I currently have are:

I typically use my 24-70 and 85 for most of my client sessions it is important they are easily accessible.

Then, you guessed it, next comes the bag... I bring all of my gear in my thinktank bag. If you are a photographer and haven't heard of this bag, stop everything and check it out. It’s my favorite. I also keep a small ona bag with me during my shoots to hold any extra lens, keys and cell phone. I also leave a little room for quick snacks and space for whatever is in my client's pockets should they need me to hold anything.

One important thing to note is that getting expensive gear is not necessary in order to be a good photographer. I will say however that it does make a difference. Some gear makes for a more enjoyable photo shoot and often money spent toward better equipment pays off in your photo results.

Now it's time to pack my bag! Here is what is inside when I leave the house:

  • My thinktank bag

  • Fully charged batteries and cards (checked the day before)

  • 2 cameras at every shoot

  • Lenses chosen for specific session (generally my 24-70 lens and 85)

  • 100 macro lens to photograph the ring at the end of the session or at the outfit change

  • My small ona bag for extra lens and keys/snacks

  • Expodisc for white balance/step stool if the couple is tall/snacks for them (and for me!)

These items are ones I bring to almost every client session. Knowing what is in my bag is crucial so that it all makes it out of my house and to the session! These items are especially great for family sessions or engagement sessions but the wedding day requires a little more gear. Want to know what I add for a wedding day or reception session? Check out part 2 next month to learn more!!
