How to Create Dramatic Reception Photos with Flash

In case you missed it, this summer I am launching an online flash course all about creating light and bright images at wedding receptions. It is your one-stop-shop for improving the quality of your reception images NO MATTER the lighting situation. It is made up of 14 modules that you can tackle at your own pace and is filled with everything I’ve learned about capturing gorgeous reception images with flash. We’re talking hours and hours of education! But, more about that later…

I realize that not everyone wants to photograph in my same light and bright style and that is totally okay! Photography would be boring if all photographers’ work looked the same. Our unique artistic views are what makes this industry so fun! So, for those of you who are looking to capture weddings in a more dark and dramatic lighting style, I have three tips for you!

Look for Dark Backgrounds

Dark backgrounds are a problem when you’re working a reception without flash. However, once you have your flash set up, they are the key to dramatic contrast in your photos. The flash will pop against the dark background and bring your subject to life.

Increase your Flash, Decrease your Settings

My next tip for dramatic lighting in your reception photos is to increase your flash power. Your flash can be anywhere from 1/8th power to half power to get the results you’re looking for. Then be sure to lower your camera settings to ISO 100, Shutter Speed 1/200, and Aperture f/2 or more.

Move your Lights Closer to the Subject

Moving your lights closer to the client keeps the light on them without spreading to the background or other people. This will keep your images focused and dramatic.

When you follow these three simple tips, your images will be dark, high in contrast, and full of drama! You can play with where you place your lights and the power of your flash to create dramatic reception images every time.

If you ARE looking to improve your light and airy reception photos, take a look at my new online course. You can trust me when I say that this course is a total game changer! As a wedding photographer, I have seen every lighting situation in the book. And take it from me, it is too risky to rely on the sun shining that day for natural light. It is equally risky to blindly trust whatever lighting the reception venue has installed. So PLEASE use my experience and trial and error to your advantage. After years of working and studying to improve my indoor flash, I love knowing that I am able to create the light that I need for gorgeously bright photos no matter the circumstances that I am in.

If you’re unsure of your flash settings, can’t achieve the light-filled look that you want, or get frustrated by how much time you stress over your lights instead of photographing the reception, this course is made for you!
